The correlation between feeling well on the outside and our mental health
Feeling good on the outside is important to mental health because there is a strong connection between our physical well-being and our emotional state.
1.Self-Esteem and Confidence: When we feel good about our appearance, it boosts our self-esteem and confidence. Feeling comfortable in our own skin allows us to engage more confidently with others and face life's challenges with a positive attitude. This can mean for few, setting up appointments with professionals or finding solutions at home. Skin, hair, cosmetics, nutrition etc- they all link to self-esteem. Recently I changed my work outfits, it boosted my own confidence! I found studies that showed that individuals who dress professionally and maintain groomed looks are perceived as more competent and credible. This perception in studies, lead to greater trust from colleagues, superiors, and clients.
2. Body-Mind Connection: Our bodies and minds are interconnected. Physical sensations can influence our emotions, and vice versa. Engaging in activities that make us feel good physically can have a positive impact on our mood and overall mental well-being. This can look like hiking, running, walking, doing yoga or simply a hobby you like.
3.Mindfulness and Relaxation: Taking care of our bodies often involves practices like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises. These activities promote mindfulness and relaxation, which are beneficial for calming the mind and reducing feelings of overwhelm.
4,Better Sleep: Good physical health, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, contributes to improved sleep quality. Sufficient and restful sleep is essential for mental clarity, emotional stability, and overall cognitive function. Personally, I struggle with finding a healthy amount of time to scroll on my phone at night. I like to use my night free time to scroll but often over do it, causing me to sleep in late and wake up feeling grogy the next day.
5.Social Interaction: Feeling good on the outside can lead to increased social interaction and a greater sense of belonging. Positive self-image can make it easier to connect with others, form meaningful relationships, and reduce feelings of isolation.
It's important to remember that mental health is multifaceted, and taking care of our physical well-being is just one aspect of maintaining overall mental wellness. Combining physical self-care with emotional self-awareness, seeking support when needed, and practicing coping strategies can lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life.
